Wow! Can you believe all the news about anabolic steroids right now? It causes chaos but not for the right reasons. Let's take a few moments to look at what makes the most common use of these performance enhancers without the fact that people are "cheating."

First let's talk about whether this is really cheating or at least try to get an opinion on this. To do this we need to know what we are talking about. Anabolic means to build up (rather than shrink which means to break down or tear down). A steroid is just a type of molecule found in the body and because of its structure it acts as a hormone and controls the binding of DNA by attaching the nucleus and attaching it to various parts of the DNA-producing machinery. So these anabolic steroids are just things that move in the muscles, among other tissues, and build up.


Basically they simply add to the natural process that is already going on throughout our bodies. Those people who naturally have high levels of these hormones will have bigger muscles naturally and have more energy when they use them. So the question is, is it a real skill that begins to have more power or a mindless shooting. I personally prefer the latter and for this reason I do not think that cheating is as much a result of one's true athletic ability. There are two main reasons for my thinking. First you still have to work hard to have bigger muscles while taking steroids. Second, you still have to master the bat and choose the right tone of voice to master it. In both cases you are simply using a "tool" to increase your energy level, much like the sunglasses that help you see a fly better on the outside field but do not catch the ball.


You might be surprised to hear me say that I don't think anabolic steroids should be legal. You have to hear my reason though - not because I think it's cheating but rather I think it's not good for the player's life. You see, the muscles that make you strong are not the only ones affected by these things. They touch your heart and put you at risk of sudden death. They also make your muscles too big for your body to support which means greater chance of flexibility, ligament, and bone damage. There are many other things that are wrongly affected and that make these things totally inappropriate.
